The Senior Management Team at the University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich,
is proposing the closure of honours degree courses in Modern Languages,
including German. This would not only remove languages degree courses from
the University, but from an entire region - UEA is sixty miles away from any
other university. There are several ironies in the proposal. One is that the
region has unusually strong ties with Mainland Europe. Another irony,
particularly for Germanists, is that UEA was, for very many years, the
academic home of WG (Max) Sebald.
