There must be something behind this, because the last
sentence of Part II is identical - the same words
frame the story.
I don't see any link to the earlier Potiphar Gubbins
("Study of an Elevation, in Indian Ink", Departmental
Ditties, likewise dismissed by a Society Discussion
Group reported in KJ No. 168, Dec 1968) but I wonder
if it is an allusion to the marines in "The Bonds of
Discipline"? I see from Stewart that "Bonds" was first
published on 15 August 1903 whereas "Lawful" was on 3
and 10 October 1903.
