one would have to float quite a ways down the Loire, in order to disembark on
a quai at LeMans.
one *could*, i suppose, go down the Loire to the Maine, up that to the Sarthe,
and up that to LeMans --some heavy polling, on those last two legs, but
perhaps still preferable to going by land, if one had a heavy load to ship.
the land route doesn't look all that long, as the crow flies, but hitching
rides with flying crows was a dodgey business, in the m.a.
question is, would relic trafficers from Fleury heading for LeMans go from
Orleans through Chateaudun or through Vendome, to get there?
>Abbot Desiderius II of Monte Cassino 'discovered' the bones of Benedict in
the mid 11th century during his excavations to rebuild Monte Cassino (thus
disputing the claims of Fleury). Scolastica's bones were declared to be there
as well, since the two had been buried together. The monks from Fleury, one
must assume, had gotten the wrong set of bones at Monte Cassino.
?
why couldn't it have been Desiderius who had "gotten the wrong set of bones"
?
after all, we have it on Good Authority that the ones at Fleury made the
flowers bud out in mid-winter all through the pays de la Loire ; caused the
hands of a Disbeliever to get stuck to his reliquary and King Philip's siege
of LePuiset to end a miserable and humiliating failure ; generically cured
countless of the halt and the lame... are we not to believe *that* evidence?
and, it would seem like D. would have had a bit more temptation to "invent"
genuine relics than the poor monks from France, who were just trying to steal
the Genuine Article.
