medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I haven't "worked through" Alanus de Insulis' _De fie catholica contra haereticos_ but I have just now skimmed though portions of the text in Migne, including the opening and closing sections (as these can be more stylistically elevated and thus perhaps more difficult than other portions of a medieval Latin treatise). I can't say that I found it very difficult, either in syntax or in lexis. If there are particular passages that resist your best efforts at understanding, you might ask for assistance on these.
Also, though there does not appear to be a complete English translation of the work as a whole, there will surely be translations of portions of it in various writings having to do with medieval Western views of groups whose practices or beliefs Alan opposes. A Google search s.v. "alan" and "waldenses" quickly brought me to this footnote, for example:
"21Alan of Lille, Against the Waldensians (1200-1202), partially reprinted in translation in Jeffrey Burton Russell, Religious Dissent in the Middle Ages, pp. 52,53."
Further searching in the scholarly literature on the Cathars and on Latin Christian anti-judaic polemic might turn up other material that could be helpful.
Best,
John Dillon
