medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Marjorie Greene <[log in to unmask]> is having trouble with her
outgoing e-mail and asked me to forward the following to the list:
I would be interested to know more about this iconography.
There is a relatively modern painting of Mary sans any Christ child,
bare-breasted. I'll see if I can get any details about artist, time
period and, especially, reason for such a depiction.
On the North wall of the chancel of this church (North Cove) there
was a Harrowing of Hell in which the jaws of Hell looked decidedly
fishy - is this something to do with the story of Jonah as
prefiguring the Harrowing?
In medieval iconography Jonah prefigures Christ, who was in the tomb
three days. The jaws of hell as "fishy" probably arises from
Leviathan in the OT. There are many Romanesque tympana (and some
Gothic) with this theme. Let me know if you'd like any URLs at
[log in to unmask] I can receive, just not send and have no idea
how long this will go on... If necessary, I'll send through another
e-mail provider.
