medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. February) is the feast day of:
Montanus and companions (d. 259) A group of ten disciples of Cyrpian of
Carthage, martyred in the reign of Valerian. Their own account of their
imprisonment is extant, along with an account of their martyrdom by
eyewitnesses.
Praetextatus of Rouen (d. 586) Praetextatus (Prix) became bishop of Rouen
in 550. He was accused of treason and exiled in 577, but restored in 584.
This was very much against the wish of Queen Fredegunde, whose sins P. had
publicly denounced. So, being one of the tougher Merovingian queens, she
had P. assassinated in his own cathedral on Easter Sunday (!).
Liudhard (d. c. 600) Liudhard was a Frank, according to legend the bishop
of Senlis. When Princess Bertha married King Ethelbert of Kent, Liudhard
was her chaplain. There isn't any evidence of missionary work until
Augustine and his cohort of missionaries arrived.
Robert of Arbrissel (blessed) (d. 1117) Robert was from Brittany, the son
of a priest. After study inParis he became a cleric at Rennes, but was so
unpopular because of his reforming efforts that he had to flee Brittany.
So he became a hermit in the forest of Craon (near Angers), where he
founded the monastery of La Roe. Urban II commissioned R. as a wandering
preacher; he founded the double monastery of Fontevrault for the male and
female disciples he had attracted in 1099.
John Theristus (d. 1129) John was born in Palermo, the son of a woman
captured and enslaved by the Muslims. At the age of 14 J. escaped to
Calabria and became a monk (later abbot) at Stilo. He got his nickname
"the mower" (Theristus) by miraculously cutting a large hay field in a
short time.
Adela of Blois (d. 1137) Adela was the youngest daughter of William the
Conqueror and Mathilda. She married Stephen of Blois, was active in French
politics, seems to have been responsible for getting Stephen to go on the
Crusade of 1101 after he abandoned the first crusade, and, when he died on
the latter venture, was very active in endowing monasteries and churches.
