medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. February) is the feast day of:
Sadoc of Seleucia and companions (d. 345 or 342) Sadoc (Sadoth, Shadhost)
was metropolitan of Seleucia-Ctesiphon (Persian Mesopotamia) and head of
the Persian church. Shah Shapur II ordered his arrest along with 128 other
Christians. Most were martyred immediately, but S. and eight companions
were kept in prison for five months before their execution.
Eleutherius of Tournai (d. c. 531) Eleutherius was a native of Tournai
(Belgium) and became bishop, perhaps the first, there in 486. He was an
active missionary to the Franks who settled in the area. His legend tells
that he was killed by some local Arians.
Eucherius of Orleans (d. c. 738) A native of Orleans, Eucherius became
bishop there in 721. He opposed Charles Martel's policy of taking
ecclesiastical land to support his fight against the Moors, as a result of
which he was exiled.
Leo of Catania "The Thaumaturge" (d. 787) Leo was a priest of Ravenna who
became bishop of Catania (Sicily). He won respect for his learning and his
miracle-working ability.
Colgan the Wise (d. c. 796) Colgan was abbot of Clonmacnois (Co. Offaly,
Ireland) and a friend of Alcuin.
Wulfric (d. 1154) Wulfric was a secular priest of not-very-good morals.
But he converted (thus his inclusion on this list) and became a hermit at
Haselbury Plucknett in Somerset (England). The Cistercian abbot John of
Ford wrote his biography.
Elizabeth Picenardi (blessed) (d. 1468) Elizabeth was a native of Mantua.
She became a Servite tertiary, colleged a group of Mantuan noble disciples,
and founded a new convent with them. Her cult was confirmed in 1804.
