medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. February) is the feast day of:
Odran the Martyr (d. c. 452) Legend tells that the Irish Odran became
Patrick's chariot-driver, and was killed in an ambush meant for Pat (after
he had anticipated the danger and gallantly changed places with his
passenger). O. was the only Irishman remembered as a martyr in early
Ireland.
Martyrs of the Holy Land (d. c. 509) This is a large group of hermits and
monks, slaughtered during a raid by Bedouin who were allied to the
Persians.
Barbatus (d. 682) Barbatus was from Benevento, and became bishop there in
663. He opposed monthelitism, organizing resistance to Constans II. B.
also stands out in the historical record for suppressing a local snake cult
that was adopted by Lombard immigrants.
Mansuetus of Milan (d. c. 690) Mansuetus was a native of Rome who became
archbishop of Milan in c. 672. He was a western leader in the fight
against monothelitism.
Beatus of Liebana (d. 789) Beatus was from Asturias (Spain) and became a
monk at Liebana. He was an active opponent of the adoptionist heresy,
after which he became abbot of Valcavado. He is known today for his
commentary on the Apocalypse.
Belina (d. 1135) Belina lived near Troyes. While out sheepherding, a
local noble tried to rape her, and killed her when she fought back. She
was canonized in 1203.
Conrad of Piacenza (d. 1354) Conrad was a noble of Piacenza whose
religious life started with an accident: while out hunting he started a
forest fire. A poor man was blamed for it and executed. Conrad was upset,
gave away his possessions, sent his wife off to join the Poor Clares, and
became a hermit for the rest of his life.
Alvarez of Cordoba (blessed) (d. c. 1430) Avarez was a Dominican, a
successful preacher whose campaigns ranged through Andalucia, France, and
Italy. He founded a reform friary in 1423 that became a noted center. A's
cult was confirmed for Cordoba in 1741.
