medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. February) is the feast day of:
Faustinus and Jovita (2d cent.) Legend tells that F and J were two
brothers, nobles of Brescia. They were beheaded in Hadrian's reign. The
fact that their cult is ancient did not prevent its suppression in 1969.
Berach (6th cent.) Berach was a disciple of Kevin of Glendalough. He went
on to found a monastery at Kilbarry (Co. Roscommon, Ireland).
Severus of Munstermaifeld (d. c. 530) Gregory the Great tells that Severus
was a parish priest in the Abruzzi. Through neglect he wasn't present to
attend on a dying man, so he resurrected the guy so he coud give him the
last rites. His relics were moved to Munstermaifeld near Koblenz in the
tenth century.
Farannan (d. c. 590) The Irish Farannan was a disciple of Colum Cille on
Iona. He returned to Ireland, though, and became a hermit in Co. Sligo at
a place named Allernan after him.
Gualfredo della Gherardesca (d. c. 765) Gualfredo (Walfrid) was a Pisan
nobleman. When middle-aged, he joined two other married men to found the
monastery of Palazzuolo and a nearby convent for their wives and G's
daughter. G. was first abbot of Palazzuolo, succeeded by one of his five
sons. His cult was confirmed in 1861.
Sigfrid of Vaxjo (d. c. 1045) Sigfrid was an English monk who went to
Norway as a missionary (invited by King St. Olaf), before going on to
become a bishop in Sweden. He was a successful missionary; his triumphs
included baptizing the Swedish king (also Olaf). He is supposed to have
been canonized in 1158, but there is no documentation to support this.
Julia of Certaldo (blessed) (d. 1367) Julia was from Certaldo near
Florence. She was a domestic servant who became an Augustinian tertiary
when aged eighteen. She went on to become a recluse in her native town.
Her cult was confirmed in 1819.
