medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. February) is the feast day of:
Agabus (1st cent.) Agabus was a prophet, mentioned in Acts 9:28 and
21:10-12. Medieval legend made him a Carmelite monk.
Stephen of Lyons (d. 512) Stephen was bishop of Lyons, instrumental in
converting the Burgundians from Arianism to catholic Christianity.
Gregory II (d. 731) Gregory was a Roman who served as papal archivist
before he himself was elected pope in 715. He is mostly noted for two
actions of his pontificate: 1) he resisted the iconoclasm of Emperor Leo
III, and 2) he consecrated St. Boniface for the German mission. He was
also a sponsor of monasticism.
Fulcran (d. 1006) I include this saint in the hope that somebody can
direct me to more information on him. Fulcran was bishop of Lodeve (near
Montpellier) from 949 until his death. He was noted for his firmness. A
casual remark F. made that a bishop who had converted to Judaism deserved
to be burned led such an execution actually to happen (that's the part I'm
curious about), and F. performed serious penance to expiate his sin in
causing this.
Beatrice d'Ornacieaux (blessed) (d. 1309) Beatrice joined the Carthusian
convent at Parmenie when she was thirteen years old. She was a mystic,
especially devoted to the Passion, supplemented by demonic attacks.
Christina Camozzi (blessed) (d. 1456) Christina was from Porlezza (on Lake
Lugano, Italy), the daughter of a doctor. She had a sudden conversion and
became an Augustinian nun in 1454. For the last two years of her life she
served as a nurse at Spoleto and led an extremely ascetic life, which may
explain why she died at the age of 21. She was beatified in 1834.
