medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. February) is the feast day of:
Martyrs of Alexandria (d. 260) A large number of Alexandrian Christians
are commemorated as martyrs on this day who nursed the sick in a major
epidemic and died of the disease.
Proterius (d. 458) The patriarch of Alexandria was deposed by the council
of Chalcedon in 451 for favoring the monophysite cause, and Proterius had
the unenviable task of succeeding him, against the will of most of the
clergy and almost allthe populace of the city. P. had to rely on imperial
troops for protection, but that too failed him when Emperor Maurice died.
Then the monophysites got their chance: a lynch mob caught P. on Good
Friday; after they killed their patriarch they dismembered his body and
burned it.
Hilary (d. 468) Pope Hilary (Hilarus) was a Sardinian who worked for Leo I
as a legate before succeeding him as pope in 461. H. was an energetic
opponent of Nestorianism and Monophysitism. The first recorded synod in
Rome was held during H's pontificate.
Oswald of Worcester (d. 992) Oswald was a noble of Danish descent,
educated at Canterbury and then dean of Winchester. He wanted to be a monk
during a very dry spell for monasticism in England, so went to Fleury for
monastic training. On his return to England in 961 he was made bishop of
Worcester, and archbishop of ork (in addition) in 972. Oswald played an
important role in the monastic and more general ecclesiastical reform
movement in tenth-century England.
Villana de' Botti (d. c. 1360) (blessed) The daughter of rich Florentine
merchant, Villana married and lived a worldly life---until one day she
looked in a mirror and saw a demon instead of her own face (thus says the
legend). Then she converted thoroughly, becoming a Dominican tertiary and
spending the rest of her life in acts of penance and charity. Her cult was
confirmed in 1824.
