medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. February) is the feast day of:
Scholastica (d. c. 543) Scholastica was the sister of Benedict of Nursia.
She followed him to Montecassino and lived a religious life nearby. An
eleventh-century legend makes her the first Benedictine dove. She is one
of the saints blessed with two complete sets of relics, one at Montecassino
and another set at Le Mans.
Trumwin (d. c. 704) Trumwin was a monk of Whitby, consecrated by Theodore
of Canterbury as bishop for the southern Picts. He established a base at
Abercorn (near Linlithgow, Scotland) for missionary work. But when the
king who supported him was killed in battle by the Picts, T. and his
helpers had to flee.
William of Maleval (d. 1157) William seems to have been a French soldier.
He went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and on his return became abbot of a
monastery near Pisa. But he couldn't impose his notions of discipline
there, so he became a hermit at Maleval (near Siena). He attracted
disciples and founded the mother house of the Williamite order (later
absorbed by the Augustinian friars).
Hugh of Fosse (blessed) (d. 1164) Hugh was from Fosse (near Namur,
Belgium). He became a monk at Premontre under St. Norbert, becoming the
saint's companion and assistant. H. successed Norbert as abbot of
Premontre and superior general of the Premonstratensian order. His cult
was confirmed for Namur in 1927.
Paul of Hungary (blessed) (d. 1223) The subject of an unofficial cult,
Paul was a Magyar canon lawyer at Bologna, who became one of the first
members of the Order of Preachers in 1221. He established the first
Dominican presence in Hungary with astonishing rapidity before he died in
1223, according to legend killed with ninety companions on an expedition to
the Cumans.
Clare Agolanti (blessed) (d. c. 1346) Clare was a noblewoman of Rimini.
She was married twice, leading an actively sinful life in the process. But
when husband #2 died and her father and brother were killed, C. converted.
She became a Franciscan tertiary. She founded Our Lady of the Angels in
Rimini and spent the rest of her life in stringent penance. Her cult was
confirmed for Rimini in 1784
Eusebius of Murano (blessed) (d. 1501) Eusebius was a Spanish noble. When
he was ambassador to Venice, he quit his job and became a Camaldolese monk
at St. Michael's monastery on the island of Murano.
