We commissioned an assessment of the airfields at Fearn and Tain in
Easter Ross some years ago; and also asked the RCAHMS to record them.
The naval airfield at Fearn survives in a relatively complete state, and
at Tain there are quite a few buildings left but that one is under an
active RAF bombing range.
Over the years there have been various attempts to get the 'eyesores'
and 'dereliction' removed, and that was the context for the work.
However, despite much discussion, at the moment no-one really knows what
to do about them. There is a general problem with sites of this period.
How do you make them safe, accessible, and likely to survive in future?
How do you conserve rotten reinforced concrete without replacing it
entirely?

Is anyone aware of assessments being carried out on WWII airfields,
concentrating on WWII buildings and defences rather than anything
earlier. I have a vague notion of something happening at Hornchurch
Essex, but I could be wrong!
