Pacific Rim Conference on Disabilities 20th Anniversary, March 29-30. 2004
Join us in beautiful, sunny Hawai‘i in March to celebrate a special event
and milestone---the 20th Anniversary of the Annual Pacific Rim
Conference! In recognition of this special occasion, the Honorable Daniel
K. Inouye, Hawai‘i’s senior senator, has agreed to serve as the honorary
chairman of PacRim 2004. Since the first Pacific Rim Conference in 1985,
the scope and size of this premier event has grown to include participants
from the U.S. Mainland, Pacific Island Nations, Japan, Australia, the
Philippines and numerous other countries.
PacRim 2004 brings together researchers, professionals, persons with
disabilities, family members, and students in a variety of disciplines that
include health, education, social services and others. Presenters
represent a variety of disciplines – including health, medicine, social
science and the disability field
This year’s theme, “Promises to Keep, Futures to Seek”, reflects on the
promises and goals made and the opportunities created for persons with
disabilities.
PacRim 2004 conference focuses on topics of importance and current trends
to the Pacific Rim area. Strands reflect changing perspectives on
disabilities from building communities to valuing diversity and support for
all persons. Pac Rim 2004 strand topics include Lifelong Inclusion in
Education and Community; Technology Across the Ages; Parent Partnerships
and Family Supports; Employment and Adult Services; and Body, Mind and Spirit.
We are pleased to announce that the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, the third
most senior member of the U.S. Senate, has agreed to serve as the Honorary
Chairman of the 20th Annual Pacific Rim Conference on Disabilities, and
will deliver a video message when the two-day conference opens on March 29,
2004.
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Patricia A. Morrissey, Commissioner, Administration on Developmental
Disabilities, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
As Dr. Morrissey oversees four discretionary grant programs authorized by
the Developmental Disabilities Services and Bill of Rights Act of 2000.
Dr. David Braddock, Associate Vice President of the University of Colorado
(CU) System
Dr. David Braddock has contributed to cognitive disability research, public
health and social policy for more than 35 years. Dr. Braddock was at the
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from 1979-2001 as Professor of
Human Development and Public Health, as the founding head of the Department
of Disability and Human Development and of its research institute, and as
an associate dean.
Wheelchair Ballroom Dancing by Tanis Doe & Michele Anderson
Tanis Doe is a sociologist and disability rights activist who fell in love
with dance after competing in Amsterdam and discovering the possibilities
of movement for people with disabilities. Michele Andersen is a Somatic
Movement Therapist who has taught and performed mixed abilities dance for
four years.
Pac Rim 2004 Distinguished Speaker Series
Cathy Healy is a Program Officer at the Center for Workforce Preparation at
the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Healy joined the Center for Workforce
Preparation (CWP) of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in the winter of 2003 at
the completion of a yearlong Joseph P. Kennedy Public Policy Fellowship at
the Office of Disability Employment Policy, U.S. Department of Labor.
David R. Johnson, Ph.D. is the Director of the Institute on Community
Integration (UAP) and an Associate Professor in the Department of
Educational Policy and Administration, College of Education and Human
Development at the University of Minnesota. He is also the Director of the
National Center on Secondary Education and Transition, (NCSET) at the
University of Minnesota.
Robert H. Pasternack, Ph.D. was sworn in as assistant secretary for special
education and rehabilitative services on August 8, 2001, and served as
principal adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Education on all matters related
to special education and rehabilitative services.
Karen Zimbrich, M.Ed. has over 30 years of experience as a special educator
and trainer, working to include and support students with significant
cognitive and developmental disabilities of all ages in educational,
recreational, vocational and general community settings.
Poster Session and Conference Reception
20th Anniversary Ho’olaulea "Think, Eat and Be Merry"
The evening reception will open with the Poster session featuring research,
program development, and promising practices to support people with
disabilities.
Next, the Pacific Artists with Disabilities will exhibit and perform their
work to expand awareness of visual arts created by persons with
disabilities. The artists’ work will be displayed and available for
purchasing. In addition we will be holding a silent auction with many
exciting items to raise money for scholarships. So please plan to join us
for light pupus (hors d’oeuvres) while you network with colleagues and
friends.
