medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Marjorie,
As with much medieval Latin there's probably no one accepted pronunciation
of "Papias": "national" pronunciations are usually the rule here. Thus the
first 'a' could be pronounced as that in English "date" (traditional
English pronunciation, frowned on by classicists who nonetheless accept it
in fossilized loan words or loan phrases still thought of as Latin, e.g.,
the first 'a' in "habeas corpus") or as that in English (but not North
American) "ask". The latter is closer to Romance pronunciations and so in
this instance probably preferable; it's also the value preferred by
classicists for classical and classicizing Latin.
Moreover, in this instance pronunciation -- and especially accentuation --
depends in practice on one's understanding of the name's significance. If
one accepts, as I do, that the name (of the lexicographer, at least) means
"person from Pavia", then one will accent it on the second syllable,
retaining the accent familiar from the toponym. But if one thinks of it as
an "ordinary" Latin name, then the rule of the antepenult applies and the
stress falls on the first syllable.
The final, unstressed 'a' should be pronounced either as that at the end of
English "camera" or as that in British English "ask". It's not quite the
'u' of "us". Say it as you would the final syllable of "Aeneas" or the
final syllable of "habeas" in "habeas corpus".
Hope this helps,
John Dillon
