Dear List Members,
a PhD or post Doc position on "Strain Localization and Structural Evolution
of Deforming Rocks" is available at the Department of Geology of the Free
University, Berlin, Germany.
This position (BATIIA/2) is funded by the German Science Foundation as part
of our research on strain localization in geological materials. The main
goal of our project is to establish scaling parameters for strain
localization patterns in rocks, and to determine the processes underlying
the evolution of these patterns in time and space. In particular, we will
address the following questions:
(1) What are the effect(s) of pre-existing anisotropies (schistosity,
compositional banding) on localization patterns?
(2) How stable are localization patterns under conditions of changing
temperature and strain rate?
These goals may be achieved by performing "see-through" experiments and/or
by numerical modelling. This experimental or numerical modeling will be
conducted in close collaboration with other Ph.D. and MSc. projects on
natural shear zones. Team-work is therefore an essential ingredient to the
success of this Ph.D. project. The position can be filled either for one
year at the post-doc level or for two years at the Ph.D level, both with a
possible extension.
Detailed information can be obtained by contacting either Mark Handy (Tel.
+49-(0)30-838-70311, Email: [log in to unmask] or Claudio
Rosenberg (+49-(0)30-838-70902, [log in to unmask]). Internet:

Applications should include a letter of intent specifying career goals and
research interests, a curriculum vitae with at least 2 references, and
proof of attendance at academic institutions (transcripts, awarded degrees,
etc.). Deadline for applications is the 30th of March, 2004. Send
applications to: Prof. Dr. Mark Handy, Fachbereich Geowissenschaften, Haus
B, Freie Universität Berlin, Malteser-Straße 74-100, D-12249 Berlin.
