medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear friends,
As I've said before, I am not a historian though I hope I am a scholar. The
result is I have no idea how to get into the sources.
I want to find out about the actual observance of fasts such as Advent and
Lent at the end of the Middle Ages (1490s), in Scotland in particular but
English sources would give me something to go on. There does seem to be some
discrepancy between our received ideas (no meat, eggs, or animal fats for
forty days) and contemporary statements-- I have seen quotations implying a
few days' strict observance only, though they are outside my period.
Certainly I wonder what happened to all the Martinmas meat-- it can't all
have been eaten during November and between Christmas and Lent, surely?
I hope to find useful clues in the [printed] Scottish royal accounts etc to
which I do have access-- but can anyone suggest other directions in which I
could hunt? I'd be grateful for any help.
Pat
