medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Members of the list may be interested in the forthcoming Birkbeck Medieval
Seminar, February 28 2004, on the subject 'St Edmund: royalty, martyrdom,
masculinity.'
St Edmund, king of the East Angles and virgin martyr, was one of the most
popular devotional figures of the Middle Ages. Edmund's cult reflects changing
political contexts, devotional fashions and literary histories. The cult also
allows us to explore problems and paradoxes in the ideologies of kingship,
sacrifice and male virginity embodied by Edmund. The seminar will bring
together inter-disciplinary papers on the history, text and images of Edmund's
cult, from early medieval to early modern.
Registration is #7 (students/unwaged) or #10; the fee includes lunch.
