Many thanks, André-Yves, for introducing me to this very intesting source.
the website offers us the full introduction, as well as Latin and English
versions of the text.
Jim, do a search for "Chartres" in the English version and you will find a few
interesting hits, including
"...It seemed to me that I was in the great church of the virgin Mary at
Chartres, in front of the main altar of the church, and I was petitioning
the glorious Virgin there. And when I had petitioned her a little bit, lo, the
silver image, having been transformed carnally and corporeally into the
selfsame Virgin, descended from the altar and came to me. Taking me by the
hand, she led me to the middle of the steps in front of the altar and said to
me, 'Stand here, and worship God, and give Him thanks'."
Morigny was a reasonably important early 12th c. Benedictine foundation just
North of Etampes, which got into some turf wars with the much older and
powerful Royal Collegial of St. Mary in that important royal town, which
disputes generated some interesting royal charters.
a chronicle written by a monk/abbot of the place is one of the more important
narrative sources for the region in the early-mid 12th c.
[Thiou, abbé de Morigny], La chronique de Morigny (1095-1152), publiée par
Léon Mirot,... Paris : A. Picard et fils, 1909 (Collection de textes pour
servir à l'étude et à l'enseignement de l'histoire ; 41).
and is on-line, somewhere.
a cartulary survives from Morigny and was published
Essais historiques sur les villages de la Beauce. Morigny, son abbaye, sa
chronique et son cartulaire, suivis de l'histoire du Doyenné d'Etampes [Texte
imprimé], par E. Menault. Paris, 1867.
and we have a very good and important 17th c. history of the Etampes-Morigny
region

i know nothing about the place after the 12th c. --part of the church remains,
a bay or two of the original one, with some rather funky capitals, and (if i
recall rightly) a considerably later choir.
there is a large 17th-18th c. "chateau", which looks rather like it was
orignally built by the Maurists, who may have "reformed" the place at that
time.
the usually helpful Ministre de Culture "Memoire" photographic data base
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/documentation/memoire/pres.htm
shows no hits for "Morigny".
best,
christopher
