medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. January) is the feast day of:
Nicanor the Deacon (d. c. 76) Nicanor was a Jew, one of the original seven
deacons of Jerusalem (Acts 6:5). Legend tells that he eventually ended up
in Cyprus, where he was martyred in Vespasian's reign.
Paul the Hermit (d. 342) My source gives Paul's dates as c. 230-342, with
the caveat that he may never have existed at all. The sole source for
Paul's life is Jerome's rather extraordinary vita, which tells that P. was
an Egyptian who fled to the desert to escape the Decian persecution, and
lived there as a hermit for ninety years. He was visited by Antony, who
came back a second time to bury him (with the help of a friendly lion).
His cult was limited to local calendars in 1969.
Dermot the Just (6th cent.) Dermot (Diarmaid) was from Connaught. He
founded a monastery and school on the island of Innisclothran (Co.
Longford). It became a major pilgrimage center.
John Camillus the Good (d. c. 660) John became bishop of Milan in 649, and
became the first catholic bishop actually to live in the city since the
Lombards had invaded 70 years before. He was an active opponent of both
Arianism and monothelitism.
Agatho (d. 681) Agatho was born in Palermo. He may have been a monk
before becoming pope. The main achievements of his pontificate were the
Council of Constantinople (680), which took a stand against monothelitism
and Wilfrid of York's restoration to the diocese of York.
Peter Orseolo (d. 987) Peter was a noble Venetian who became doge in 976.
After two years in office, though, he quit and became a monk at Cuxa. In
his last years he became a hermit.
William de Donjeon (d. 1209) William was from Nevers (France). He was a
canon at Soissons and Paris, but then became a monk---first at Grandmont
and then the Cistercian house of Pontigny. He was abbot of two other
houses before becoming bishop of Bourges in 1200. He was especially noted
for his successes in converting Cathars. W. was canonized in 1218.
