medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. January) is the feast day of:
Priscilla (1st cent.) Legend says that Priscilla was a pious widow, the
mother of St. Pudens and hostess of St. Peter when he visited Rome. Her
villa was near the catacombs that are named after her.
Marcellus I (d. 309) Marcellus was pope for one year, and seems to have
been exiled by Maxentius. Legend says that he was put to work in the
stables of the imperial post service. His cult was reduced to local
calendars in 1969.
Honoratus of Arles (d. 429) Honoratus was the scion of a Roman consular
family. As a young man he converted to Christianity and went east to learn
about monasticism. When he returned to Gaul he founded the monastery of
Lerins. In 426 he became archbishop of Arles.
Fursey (d. c. 648) Fursey was an Irish monk who got around a lot. He
founded a monastery on an island in Lough Corrib in Ireland. Then he moved
to England and founded another monastery in Norfolk. Then he went to
Francia and founded a monastery at Lagny near Paris. He was especially
famous for his ecstatic visionary experiences, which rate a mention in
Bede's History.
Ferreolus of Grenoble (d. c. 670) Ebroin, the evil Frankish mayor of the
palace, strikes again. Ferreolus was bishop of Grenoble, killed at
Ebroin's order.
Berard of Carbio and companions (d. 1220) Francis of Assissi sent a group
of five Franciscans, led by Berard, to convert the Muslims of the Iberian
Peninsula and the Maghreb. They started preaching in Seville, but were
promptly driven out. So they tried again in Morocco---where they were
promptly beheaded. These protomartyrs of the Franciscan order were
canonized in 1481.
Gundisalvus of Amarante (blessed) (d. 1259) Gundisalvus was born near
Braga (Portugal), and became a parish priest. But his parish decided it
didn't want him---when he tried to return to his duties after a leave of
absence for pilgrimage that had stretched to fourteen (!) years. So he
became a hermit at Amarante near Oporto, later becoming a Dominican while
remaining a hermit.
