UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY
17 FEBRUARY 2004, LONDON
In Britain there are some 10 million people who have difficulty walking, more than 7 million people who have impaired hearing, and 2 million with serious sight problems. Disabled people have as many and as varied library and information needs as anyone else, but because there are so many kinds of motor and sensory impairment, their physical and intellectual access needs must be met in many different ways.
In all types of library there are excellent examples of services which meet the needs of a particular group of disabled readers but there are relatively few library and information services which adequately and appropriately satisfy everyone who has a physical disability.
BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING:
This practical workshop will consider issues such as physical access for wheelchair users and others with mobility difficulties, making information and recreational reading accessible to visually impaired people, and meeting the needs of people with hearing difficulties - a disability which is often overlooked. There will be opportunities to share experience, to look critically at what is already being done in participants' own services, and to think about ways for improvement.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL:
* understand the effects of different kinds of mobility and sensory impairment
* be aware of ways in which library and information services can facilitate physical and intellectual access for people with motor or sensory impairment
* be aware of their responsibilities in respect of the DDA
* have considered their own policies, procedures and practices in relation to the DDA
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The workshop is particularly relevant for anyone planning services or purchasing equipment, as well as for people delivering services to disabled users.
