Title: "Applying the results of systematic reviews and trials to individuals"
Who: Dr Paul Glasziou, Director, Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, Oxford
Place: www.nelh.nhs.uk/awareness/pils.asp
Abstract: Systematic reviews establish the effects of an intervention; but
to whom the results apply is not always clear. The inclusion/exclusion
criteria of trials, though they provide useful information, are
insufficient and limiting basis for generalisation. The Cochrane
Applicability and Recommendations Group aims to provide guidance to
reviewers to answer the questions "To whom do the results of the systematic
reviews apply?" and "What are the implications for patients and policy?"
The preferred approach for applying evidence to individuals is based on
risk-benefit model. This talk discusses a 5 step process to examine the
transferability of results and then apply them to different groups and
individuals.
This will be the 2nd is a pilot series of 6 phone-in seminars, hosted by
CEBM and the National Electronic Library for Health.
You will need to have a phone and an internet connection (to view
slides and ask questions) to "attend".
