medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Presumably it is already widely known by Esteemed fellow Listmembers, but
ORB has a compelling account, entitled, "Narration of the recovery of the
relics of Our Holy Father and Wonder-Worker Nicholas," which can be read as
a masterfully wrought victors' account of the theft of Saint Nicholas'
relics by Barian merchants and sailors from an Antioch monastery, in 1087.
[I came across it in connection with my research into San Nicholas Island,
off the coast of Southern California, as part of "All the Saints of the City
of the Angels."]
The lengthy and, to this reader at least, shocking narrative can be found at
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/nicholas-bari.html .
