medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. January) is the feast day of:
Daniel of Padua (d. 168) In the 11th century, the Paduans discovered some
bones. They decided that they were those of Daniel. He was added to the
legend of St. Prosdocimus (the first bishop of the city), serving as his
assistant before being gloriously martyred.
Gordius (d. 304) Gordius was a Roman centurian in Caesarea
(Cappodocia)---until he refused to take part in a sacrifice, for which he
was dismissed from the service. Then he disturbed a festival in honor of
Mars with his preaching, for which he was martyred.
Narses of Subogord (d. c. 340) Narses was bishop of the Persian diocese of
Subogord, martyred along with his disciple Joseph, most likely in Shapur
II's persecution.
Genevieve of Paris (d. 500) Genevieve is the patron saint of Paris.
Legend says that she was originally from Nanterre, but moved to Paris as a
consecrated virgin at the age of 15. There her prayers protected the city
from attacks of Huns and Franks (and continued posthumously to protect the
city from many threats). Her shrine was destroyed during the French
Revolution.
Fintan of Doon (6th cent.) Fintan was a disciple of St. Comgall at Bangor
before going on to found the monastery of Doon in Co. Limerick. His holy
well there is still visited.
Bertilla of Maroilles (d. c. 687) A Frankish noblewoman, Bertilla was part
of a saint-rich family. After producing Ss. Waldetrude and Aldegund,
Bertilla and her husband St. Walbert vowed to stop marital relations.
After she was widowed, B. became a hermit at Maroilles (near Cambrai).
