medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. January) is the feast day of:
Prisca (3rd cent.?) Prisca was perhaps a Roman vigin martyr. Her cult is
ancient and a church dedicated to her is on the Aventine---but nothing is
known about her. In 1969 her cult was restricted to her own church.
Liberata and Faustina (d. 580) L. and F. were sisters who lived in Como
(Italy). They founded a convent there; their shrine is in the city's
cathedral.
Deicola (d. c. 625) Deicola was an Irish monk of Bangor. He went with
Columbanus to Burgundy and joined in the foundation of Luxeuil. When
Columbanus was kicked out of Francia, Deicola was too old to travel with
him; he founded the monastery of Lure in the Vosges instead.
Ulfrid (Wolfred, Wilfrid) (d. 1028) Ulfrid was an Englishman, a missionary
in Sweden. He met his end at the hands of angry worshippers after he
destroyed a cult statue of the god Thor.
Beatrice II d'Este (blessed) (d. 1262) Member of the Este family of
Ferrara, Beatrice (called "II" because her aunt was also beatified) was
betrothed, but her fiance died while she was still young. So her family
founded the Benedictine convent of St. Anthony for her. She became a nun
there in 1254.
Margaret of Hungary (d. 1270) Margaret was a Hungarian princess, daughter
of Bela IV. She founded a Dominican nunnery on an island in the Danube
near Budapest, taking vows herself. She was famous for her extemely
penitential life. M. was canonized in 1943.
