medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (17. January) is the feast day of:
Speusippus, Eleusippus, Meleusippus, and Leonilla (d. c. 175) These early
martyrs are probably fictional, but legend tells that they were triplets of
Cappodocia who were martyred along with their grandmother during the reign
of Marcus of Aurelius. Their supposed relics were taken to Langre (France)
in the sixth century.
Genulf of Cahors (mid 3rd cent.) Legend tells that Genulf was sent as an
evangelist to the area around Cahors (France) along with his father, St.
Genitus. He became the first bishop of Cahors but had to flee persecution,
so he became a hermit at Celles-sur-Nahon.
Anthony the Great (d. 356) Acclaimed as the father of monasticism, Anthony
was born at Coma (upper Egypt) to a wealthy peasant family. He gave away
his inheritance and became a hermit, soon going into the true desert and
spending a long time fighting an interesting assortment of demons. He
became famous, attracting many disciples and providing very useful support
to Athanasius against the Arians of Alexandria. His vita, traditionally
attributed to Athanasius, was probably the most important document to
spread the monastic ideal to the rest of the Roman Empire.
Valentine of Passau (d. c. 470) Valentine was a missionary bishop in the
area around Passau (Austria). He is the principal patron of Passau.
Nennius (Ninnidh) (6th cent.) Nennius was a disciple of St. Finian of
Clonard, and one of the twelve apostles of Ireland---but it is no longer
known what he did to get the title. He is conected somehow to
Innismacsaint (Co. Fermanagh).
Joseph of Freising (d. 764) Joseph founded the moanstery of Isen near
Munich, and became third bishop of Freising shortly before his death.
