medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. January) is the feast day of:
Marciana of Caesarea (d. c. 303) Marciana was a consecrated virgin who
lived in Mauritania. She was accused of breaking a statue of the goddess
Diana and was thrown to the wild animals, where a bull gored her to death.
Her relics are now in Toledo (Spain).
Peter of Sebaste (d. c. 391) Peter had a lot to live up to: he was the
younger brother of SS Basil and Gregory of Nyssa. He succeeded Basil as
abbot of his monastery on the Iris River. In 380 Basil appointed P. bishop
of Sebaste (Armenia).
Waning (Vaneng) (d. c. 686) Waning was from Rouen. He was a courtier at
the Frankish court, but then became a monk. He helped his friend Wandrille
found the monastery of Fontanelle, then went on himself to found Fecamp.
Hadrian of Canterbury (d. 710) Hadrian was the African abbot of a
monastery near Naples. Pope Vitalian asked him to wander across the world
and become archbishop of Canterbury, but H. said no and suggested Theodore
of Tarsus instead. But H. ended up going to England anyway, to help
Theodore. He became abbot of SS Peter and Paul at Canterbury, where he
established a great school. H's body was discovered in 1091, which marked
the beginning of his cult.
Foellan (8th cent.) Foellan was an Irishman who went to Scotland with his
mother (St. Kentigerna) and his relative (St. Comgan). He worked as a
missionary until his death at Strathfillan (Perthshire).
Honorius of Buzancais (blessed) (d. c. 1250) Honorius was a rich merchant
from Buzancais (in Berry, France), noted for his charity. He came home
from a journey to find that his servants had robbed him. When he
protested, they killed him. He is venerated at the place of his death
(Parthenay in Poitou) as a martyr.
