medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. January) is the feast day of:
Devota (d. 303) The patron saint of Corsica and Monaco, Devota was a
Corsican who was racked to death in the reign of Diocletian.
Lupus of Chalon (d. c. 610) Lupus was bishop of Chalon-sur-Saone, famous
for helping people who were in trouble.
Emerius (8th cent.) Emerius was a Frank; he was the founding abbot of
Banoles in Catalonia.
Gamelbert (d. 800) Gamelbert was a near Augsburg, a soldier who became the
parish priest of his native village. He was noted as a stringent ascetic
and as a very successful missionary.
Gilduin (d. 1077) Gilduin was a son of the count of Dol (Brittany). At a
very young age he was made a canon in Dol, and was elected bishop in 1076
(when he was about 24). He refused the office, and went to Rome to
convince Gregory VII that he shouldn't become bishop. G. succeeded, and
died on his trip back to Dol. His cult is at Chartres, where legend says
he became a monk.
Michael Pini (blessed) (d. 1522) The subject of an unconfirmed cult,
Michael Pini is a good reminder that the Middle Ages lasted well into the
sixteenth century, even in Florence. Michael was a Florentine and held
office under Lorenzo de' Medici. But he quit and became a Camaldolese in
1502. After he was ordained he was walled up as a recluse, and remained
there until his death.
And a few other saints, even more obscure.
