One of the great things about Phyllis' "saints of the day" is that every day it brings to mind something wonderfully evocative that I can use in class... this time it is the relic of Bathild's chemise (in Chelles now, I believe) with the "embroidered" jewellery to replace the real gems she sold to give to the poor... (or so her legend says)

Today (30. January) is the feast day of:
Bathild (Balthild) (d. 680) Bathild was a Saxon, sold as a girl to an
official of the king of Neustria. She ended up marrying King Clovis II in
649. She served as regent from 656 until 664, founded the monasteries of
Corbie and Chelles, and became a nun at Chelles.
