Yes, I have seen this before. I particular I remember seeing it in
several early post-medieval contexts in Iceland, but I've seen other
odd cases. What I remember are clear deliberately drilled holes, but I
also remeber a second hole in the shaft near the distal end.
Unfortunately I can't remember the source of my information at the
moment, but I have a vague recollection regarding the feeding of warmed
up marrow to babies! I will let you know if I remember where that came
from.
