Dear Colleagues,
According to Rick (1975: 184), avian medullary bone
may appear in most (maybe all) skeletal elements. It
has been discussed during the 5th ICAZ Bird Working
Group Meeting whether medullary bone would develop in
humerus in spite of the fact that air sacs penetrate
into this bone.
I would like to note that I found evidence for
medullary bone in a Roman Period humerus of domestic
hen. I would be happy to send good quality pictures to
those who are interested in this subject.
I also would like to point at two interesting papers
of the aforementioned scientist, Anne Meachem Rick:
Rick, A.M. 1975. Bird medullary bone: a seasonal
dating technique for faunal analysts. Canadian
Archaeological Association, Bulletin no. 7: 183-190.
Rick, A.M. 1979. Some problems and solutions in
zooarchaeological interpretation of bird bones. Paper
presented at the 44th Annual Meeting Society for
American Archaeology. Vancouver, British Columbia,
April 23-25, 1979.
With my best wishes,
Erika Gál
