I am not your typical surfer. I look for the titles and the snippet and make my choice from there. I can clearly see what is a spam directory taken from ripped websites.

If you noticed the phrase I used was 3 terms in length, by removing the UK qaulifier you go 10M competing sites.
I would always go after phrases, primarily 2-3 word phrases, as single words are very unlikely to lead to qualified traffic. For example being number one for "cars" is next to useless for conversions but being number one for "car dealerships walsall" would likely be someone who is more actually going to be a potentiual customer.

I have to disagree, since the onset of adsense from google, google have made every keyphrase commercial. For some people it is easy to churn out a thousand page website from a set of keywords with random text or ripped content from other sites with a couple of clicks. Have you noticed the degradation in the quality of the google search results? That is down to all the spam content and increasing value of the search results
