A visit to Pioneer Square in Seattle will reveal a topgraphic reason why
therer is so much of Seattle 'underground' and the tour of the ground floor
premises of the original city, built at the foot of a cliff on a swamp, because the
native Indians didn't live there (and no surprise there!). These street
frontages finished up aup to 12 feet below road level, along with the associated
footways, a detail achieved by knocking the top of the cliff down to the bottom.
London has a very different geology, which has given us some wonders of a
different sort, and the Tube
