I recall a statistic that 90% of packages delivered in NYC (and most other
cities) weigh under 30Kg - and as such can be delivered on foot or bicycle.
I've also done some general analysis of total journey structure - including
shoulder journeys, ahere often 50% or less of the time taken for a "Rail"
journey is actuall spent travelling oin the train. With the potential to
dramatically cut the shoulder journey times (especially if using a bicycle cuts out
the need to wait for a bus or taxi, and allows more direct access between
train and thresholds of orign and destination. I know it works - my
cross-London connection Euston - Waerloo takes 12 minutes guaranteed by bike, and a
colleague cuts 30minutes from a 2-hour journey by cycling between London Bridge
and Liverpool Street, all delivered at considerably less cost per minute than
any rail improvement programme
