"Digital Images: Building up a Departmental Resource for intranet delivery"
**Seminar Leaders: Karla Youngs and Ed Bremner
**Location: University of Bristol.
**Date: 16th March 2004, 10.00 - 4.00
**Cost: £75.00
**Background:
Most teaching departments have over the years, built up a collection
of slides that are an integral part of the tools of the teaching
staff and students. They know the contents of the collection, and
the provenance of the images. They are familiar friends that have
been used time and time again. They might not be the best photos in
the world and they might no longer be in the best condition, but they
do the job.
Now as time moves on, there is of course a demand to make these
images available in a digital form for use within new forms of
delivery such as Powerpoint presentations and VLEs.
So far, the current ethos has been that one of the main gains from
digitisation has been to allow image collections to be widely
published onto the Internet, however this has brought many extra
problems and difficulties that would be avoided if the collection was
only available to its primary users within the host institute.
This Seminar looks at whether it is now possible to undertake
pragmatic, cheap and easy capture of department collections for their
own use and the 'pros and cons' of doing so.
**Who should come:
Departmental Managers who wish to learn more about creating and
building departmental resources and their strategic implications.
Teaching and lecturing staff wanting to digitise their own
photographic/slide teaching collections.
Teaching and academic support staff who have an interest in
developing digital imaging capabilities and resources within their
own department.
Anyone with a small analogue image collection looking for pragmatic
and easy ways to digitise their collection for teaching use.
