A further aside on Time Coward's aside. A significant number of technologies never get left behind. They simply become less often used. We live in a trench continually working with material from various layers of the technological past - the past is present. Given the pattern of development that any complex technology undergoes, we would appear still to be dealing with the primitive stage of computers. They breakdown a lot and still look like typewriters with TV screens. I love my pencil!
