I think that the issue was probably more related to gas than trust.

Pythagoras was strongly against eating beans to the extent of making it a religious principle. Empedocles reportedly said
"Abstain wholly from laurel leaves.......wretches, utter wretches keep your hands from beans."(Russell 1946)
Perhaps the secret of Greek philosophy was the dual recognition that trust is a bad starting point for scientific or philosophical
enquiry and that beans engender an unhealthy degree of trust.
