Dear Sanjoy,
Do have a look at the following undergraduate and postgraduate websites
for an example of an environmental design discipline that focusses on
the visitor/user experience and specifically the designing of
environments that achieve effective communication.
http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/courses/museum/index.shtm
http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/post-grad-courses/programmes/architecture_inter
disc.html
From our perspective the experience design community has so far
over-emphasized the importance of the computer screen. For us that is a
side issue allbeit a very interesting one: we focus on those types of
physical and hybid environment that are best seen as continuous with the
communication processes that take place within and through them. This
sets a much broader and longer life agenda for experience designing.
I should point out that we don't adhere exclusively to the experience
design methodology. We have a very open approach to the design of
communicative environments.
I hope this is of interest.

Subject: Design for Experience
Hi,
I am looking for readings, research/scholarly article citations,
course syllabi, leads, comments, suggestions, and dialectics on "Design
for Experience". Names of such designers and their musings and
declarations as well as references to particular designs are also
welcome. Although my primary interest is in the design of built
environments, I look forward to receiving materials on other forms of
design also.
Thank you in advance.
