I wonder if this gets back to my earlier post about the dangers of
talking about talent in the singular. There are certainly advantages
for some sorts of designers of some kinds of cultural awareness that
correspond strongly with economic advantage. (These advantages are
greater in some sorts of design than others. For other design,
privilege could be a blinding force for some.)
On the other hand, Paul Rand (whose quote started this thread) grew up
poor in an Orthodox Jewish family, hardly the best place to learn
elitist aesthetic values of secular capitalism.
