LEEDS UNIVERSITY CENTRE FOR ENGLISH MUSIC
William Byrd and Some of his Contemporaries
Two Conferences, 10-12 September 2004
CALL FOR PAPERS
This is a Call for Papers for two related and consecutive conferences to
be held in the School of Music, University of Leeds. Residential
accommodation will be in Ellerslie Hall, close by on the campus: delegates
will be able to stay for either or both of the conferences.
10-11 September William Byrd: the Songs and English Church Music
Philip Brett's second volume of the William Byrd trilogy was never
written, but much work has been done by many scholars (including Brett)
since that book was expected. This conference will review the state of
scholarship concerning Byrd's English-texted music. What exactly do we
know, and what shape does the subject-matter now take?
11-12 September Composers at St Paul's, 1590-1650
Recent work on some of Byrd's contemporaries who were not members of the
Chapel Royal suggests that it is time to consider their music more
systematically. Byrd, Gibbons and others wrote in a "Chapel Royal" style
that apparently derived from the continental practice of Alfonso
Ferrabosco I and Lassus, whereas composers outside the Chapel Royal tended
to use rather different styles and compositional methods. Because these
styles are not now regarded as the norm they often mark out their
composers, unfairly, as second- or third-rate practitioners. This
conference will focus on composers working at St Paul's cathedral, and
especially on those celebrated in Thomas Myriell's Tristitiae Remedium.
Papers should be 30 minutes in length. Abstracts of c. 250 words should be
sent to Richard Rastall by Monday 7 June 2004.
