The spirit of the former IMM, although battered first by the merger with
the Institute of Mining Engineers and secondly by the subsequent
merger with the Institute of Materials, is alive and well within the
London and Southern Counties Minerals Industries Institute ("MinSouth"),
a consitituent part of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3).
As one who joined the former IMM as a student member in 1951 and
was later a serving member of the IMM council over a period of ten years
(seven as an elected member, three as a vice-president) and now for
several years a member of council of MinSouth, I can vouch for the
continuity in spirit and in the range of interests covered in the technical
presentations given monthly at meetings throughout most of the year.
For those for whom the merger of the IMM with the Institute of Materials
was a step too far, MinSouth, as a new separate institute affiliated to the
IOM3, is making provision to admit people as members of MinSouth who
are not members of IOM3. Come and join us!
