AUTHORING RICH MEDIA CONTENT USING SMIL - (SYNCHRONISED MULTIMEDIA
INTEGRATION LANGUAGE)

Developed under the aegis of the W3Cıs Interaction Domain, SMIL supports the
authoring of "rich media" presentations that integrate streaming audio and
video with images, text and other types of material. SMIL is an HTML-like
language that is easy to learn and can be authored using any text editor.
With the release of SMIL 2.0 content developers now have a standards based
language for developing rich media content for on-line delivery.
This BUFVC course provides content developers with detailed information
on how to author multimedia content using the features of the W3Cıs SMIL
specification supported in the current generation of web browsers and media
players.
The course will cover:
- introduction to SMIL
- resources for SMIL authoring
- understanding SMIL support in players and browsers
- basic SMIL authoring
- introduction to SMIL 1.0
- authoring content with SMIL 1.0
- using Real Networkıs RealPlayer
- using Appleıs QuickTime player
- introduction to SMIL 2.0
- authoring content with SMIL 2.0
- using Microsoftıs IE6 web browser
- using Real Networks RealOne player
Throughout the course, SMIL code samples will be introduced and explained,
as they are used to build a complete SMIL 2.0 application A CD-ROM with the
complete source code and the sample application used in the course will be
provided to each delegate.
John Smith works in the Information Tools Team, Specialist Services Division
of the Computing Services at the University of Edinburgh where he is
responsible for the management and development of streaming media services,
and for web and database integration and application services.
