Outsourcing, career boosting and human centred web design - CILIP at Online Information 2004

Free presentations on crucial issues no information professional can afford to ignore

'Taking you to where you want to be', 'No going back' and 'Human centred web design' are the themes of three essential free sessions to be hosted by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals at Online Information 2004.

In 'No Going Back?' authors Sheila Pantry and Peter Griffiths will be taking a long, hard look at the management of outsourcing in the library and information sector. The authors of a new book on the subject from CILIP's own publishers Facet Publishing, and both well known in information consultancy and electronic publishing, as well as being experts in training and lecturing, Sheila and Peter will bring you up to date on this topical issue and will be on hand to answer your questions. Organised by CILIP's recruitment consultancy INFOmatch, this free event is a must for anyone who needs to get to grips with this complex issue.

Meanwhile, CILIP's Qualifications & Professional Development Adviser Michael Martin will be 'Taking you to where you want to be' in his presentation about CILIP's new Framework of Qualifications. To be launched from next April, the Framework will for the first time open up the opportunity for specialist qualifications to CILIP members who are working as library and information assistants or in paraprofessional roles. Besides being a separate qualification in its own right, the new grade of Certified Membership will also introduce an additional route to Chartered Membership, and Michael will be explaining how members will be able to make best use of these two qualifications as a means of progressing their own careers.

Finally, no information professional can afford to ignore web design, and CILIP's own new web site provides an object lesson in a session on the importance of design and architecture. In his presentation 'Tips & techniques for human centred design', Richard Sedley of leading web designer cScape will be using the new CILIP site as his case study. cScape's own research indicates that roughly 60% of all website users establish their views on whether a website is usable and offers trusted information within 10 seconds of arriving at the home page. First impressions really are one of the most important factors. So getting the information architecture and design right is critical.

All these sessions are presented free to visitors to Online Information 2004, to be held at Olympia from November 30 to December 2.

The book

Managing Outsourcing in Library and Information Services by Sheila Pantry OBE (Independent Consultant) and Peter Griffiths (Head of Information Services, Home Office)

This book shows how outsourcing can assist in managing staff time successfully in order to provide the services that users want. It demonstrates that the very process of examining the effectiveness of each separate service element - when considering outsourcing as an option - offers spin-off benefits for the library or information service.

Published October 2004; 200pp; paperback; 1-85604-543-9; £29.95 (30% discount - £20.97 - if purchased at Online Information 2004)
