Leading life-changing award opens for entries
Celebrating the value of libraries to people and communities
The CILIP / LiS Libraries Change Lives Award opens for entries this month, and the judges would like to hear about any library and information related project that is making a difference to people and communities.
Established as a leading accolade in the library and information calendar, the award offers an excellent opportunity for entrants to share good practice, recognise the efforts of staff and partner organisations, and bring projects and services to national attention.
"We welcome entries from any sector of the library and information world," says Nigel Thomas, who represents CILIP's Community Services Group as Chair of the judging panel. "They could be reading projects, learning projects, or projects that promote information. We are looking for projects that have affected people's lives for the better, whoever those people might be."
The judges will select three finalists to attend a prestigious award ceremony at the Library + information Show, which takes place on 20 and 21 April 2005 at The Pavilion, NEC, Birmingham. The overall winner will receive a trophy and £4,000 to put into their project. The two other finalists will receive a certificate and £1,000 each.
Nigel Clear, Event Director for LiS says, "Last year's winner, the Mobile Library Travellers Project from Essex County Council Libraries, demonstrated the inspirational work library services do in reaching out to people often excluded from mainstream society. I hope that this year we will uncover many more examples of libraries changing lives."
Cllr Elizabeth Hart, Cabinet Member for Libraries and Lifelong Learning in Essex says, "Winning the 2004 Libraries Change Lives Award has given Essex many opportunities to share good practice with library colleagues across the UK. It has given the staff involved with the project some much-deserved recognition and it has meant that we have been able to work with new partners to offer a better service to Traveller families across the county. "
