Dear LIS-CILIP members,
Many thanks for your patience while we amended the subscriptions web pages and set things in motion for the postal ballot of all members which is the next stage in the subscriptions reform proposals process. We had to do these things first because, under the byelaws, the timing is very tight and we needed to progress the ballot as a priority. Now we can bring everyone up to date with the details and explain where the further information is to be found. So the latest situation is...
As you may imagine the future subscription model for the Institute was the main issue for debate at the AGM on 21 October. After discussion this matter was referred by the AGM to a Postal Ballot of the membership. The Postal Ballot has to be completed within a matter of days under the CILIP Byelaws. The result of the Postal Ballot is binding.
All members will shortly be receiving a ballot paper and an accompanying paper which sets out the two options for their consideration in the manner agreed by the AGM. The ballot paper will ask members to choose between 2 options, as follows:
Option 1 is the preferred option of the Honorary Treasurer and was endorsed by CILIP Council on 13 July. It proposes moving over time to a flat rate subscription system with concessionary rates for Members on lower incomes and discounts for direct debit payers.
Option 2 was prepared by the Honorary Treasurer in advance of the AGM as a contingency measure to ensure adequate membership income for CILIP in 2005 in the event of Option 1 being rejected. It proposes a continuation of the existing income-related system with a 3% inflation increase on current subscription levels.
The presentation made by the Honorary Treasurer to the AGM and other supporting material is available on the CILIP website at:
http://www.cilip.org.uk/membership/subscriptionsreform/
In addition, the Chief Executive has asked two members of CILIP Council to write statements giving their views on the options in order to stimulate discussion. These statements will appear on the CILIP website as soon as they are both received, and also on LIS-CILIP. Other Members are encouraged to add their views to the discussion through LIS-CILIP.
I hope this provides sufficient information for members for the moment. Currently we're getting the ballot ready as fast as we can, and members will receive the ballot paper, the details of the two options, the covering letter from the Chief Executive and the reply envelope shortly.
