Hi Laura
Under Martyn Wade's leadership, Glasgow City Libraries did some fairly
radical transformation of its branches (community libraries) a few years
ago, putting in sofas and desks/tables purchased from Ikea (rather than
library furniture suppliers) and decorating with really bright colour
schemes. Some of these developments are reported in the November 2002 Update
- see the article online at
http://www.cilip.org.uk/update/issues/nov02/article2nov.html
but you really need to visit the libraries to get the full flavour!

Subject: the bookshop effect
I'm trying to find out how many libraries consciously consider using
retail techniques for displaying / improving access to books.
Has anyone ordered specific furniture for displaying books face on?
Does anyone have comfy sofas in their library?
Has anyone tried these approaches and found they don't work?
let me know your experiences or thoughts if you have time.
thanks for your help.
