CILIP IS TOP TRAINER SAYS BUSINESS SURVEY
2004 Business Information Resources Survey puts CILIP ahead of leading business information training providers
More business information professionals use CILIP than any other external library and information trainer, according to the latest Business Information Resources Survey, published in the March issue of Business Information Review. Out of 58 respondents, 41% said that they used CILIP, compared with 27% and 25% respectively citing other leading training organisations.
Independent consultants Pam and Allan Foster, who devised, compiled and reported on this year's Survey, expressed surprise at the result. Other trainers that respondents cited offered more business information-related training than did CILIP, which tended to offer courses on matters related to the profession as a whole, they pointed out. "Clearly, respondents give a high priority to such matters," they concluded.
Although delighted to hear the news, CILIP's Head of Training & Development, Penny Simmonds, was not at all surprised. "Our goal is for CILIP Training & Development to become the trainer of choice for all information and library professionals, and we have spent the first two years of CILIP's existence setting about making this happen," she commented. "Unlike the Survey's authors, therefore, I was not surprised by the results."
In addition, several Survey respondents cited the United Kingdom Online User Group (UKOLUG) as their most used trainer. Besides being the only specialist niche trainer that respondents mentioned, UKOLUG is also a Special Interest Group of CILIP, making the result a double first for CILIP.
CILIP's Head of External Relations Tim Buckley Owen, who edits Business Information Review (BIR) independently in his spare time, was equally pleased by the double result. "I knew that a question about training organisations was going to be included this year," he said. "But the Survey is carried out completely independently of BIR and I certainly had no idea that CILIP would prove to be such a popular choice, or that UKOLUG would feature as well. This result gives a significant boost to CILIP in the business information community."
