the British Cartographic Society. Speakers already in place, but
I would welcome further contributions from any interested contributors
before the end of January deadline.
Monday 16 August 1150-1300
Toponymy: current issues with geographic names
[speakers so far include Munro (RSGS), Kadmon (Jerusalem), Fraser
(Edinburgh),
Kerfoot (NRCanada, Ottawa)]
This session examines the political, social and institutional issues
affecting
and affected by geographical names [toponymy, for those who are
unfamiliar with
the term, is the study of geographical names]
Monday 16 August 1400-1820
The nature of modern cartography and geographic information
[speakers so far include Wood (Aberdeen), Ashworth (Collins
Bartholomew),
Cassettari (GeoInformation Group), Dorling (Sheffield), Perkins
(Manchester),
Forrest (Glasgow), Murray (Ordnance Survey)]
This is a broad ranging overview of modern spatial data handling,
mapping,
map use and map production, in a geographical context.
Wednesday 18 August 1700-1820
National and Regional Atlases
This tentative session, organised in conjunction with the International
Cartographic
Association, will be a more practical demonstration of contemporary
atlases, traditional
and digital.
