Papers describing and evaluating the use of IT in any of the above areas
will also be welcome.
Please note that papers must be relevant to some aspect of the teaching
and
learning of phonetics. Papers which deal with general phonetic

Conference on Manner Alternations in Phonology
Date: 23-Jun-2005 - 25-Jun-2005
Location: Berlin, Germany
Contact Person: Marzena Zygis
Meeting Email: [log in to unmask]
Web Site: http://www.zas.gwz-berlin.de
Linguistic Field(s): Phonetics; Phonology
Call Deadline: 08-Apr-2005
Meeting Description:
The topic of this conference is the category manner in phonology, i.e.
(traditional) features such as [nasal], [lateral], [continuant], [stride
nt], as
well as processes which alter these features. Manner features are necess
ary to
distinguish classes of sounds such as stops, affricates, fricatives, nas
als,
laterals, as well as lesser understood sounds such as rhotics. Manner ca
tegories
are also instrumental in defining what is meant by sonority.
The two invited speakers are:
Wolfgang Kehrein, Phillips Universitaet Marburg
Moira Yip, University College London
In addition to these speakers there will be slots for approximately 15 p
apers.
While abstracts are invited on papers dealing with any aspect dealing wi
th
manner in phonology, papers dealing with the following topics are of par
ticular
interest:
1. Phonological processes (synchronic or diachronic) which alter manner
features
and their phonetic and/or phonological motivation
2. Connection between manner features and other features (e.g. place,
laryngeal, major class)
3. Connection between manner changes and prosodic structure (e.g. proces
ses
motivated by the syllable contact law, definitions of sonority)
4. Features for rhotics (i.e. central approximants, trills, taps/flaps)
5. Phonetic correlates for manner features
Papers will be 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes discussion. Deadline f
or
submission of abstracts is 8 April 2005. Notification of acceptance for
program
by 30 April. There will be no conference fees. Please submit electronica
lly an
anonymous, two page abstract (pdf, word or rtf) to:
[log in to unmask]
Please indicate the author's name and affiliation in the email.
